The Positive Crank Ventilation (PCV) valve allows pressure that builds up in the crankcase to escape to the intake manifold. The PCV valve itself is cheap and easy to replace, but this one is working fine. It is a one-way check valve, so it can easily be tested by just blowing into each end. The part that needed to be replaced here was the PCV hose. Don’t use whatever rubber hose is lying around (a high pressure fuel hose), because the hot engine gases passing through will deteriorate and melt the rubber.
